It is the patient's responsibility to bring a translator if you cannot communicate in English or Cantonese.
You do not need to physically prepare (e.g. fasting) for this procedure. However, you may require to stop your Aspirin or other blood thinners such as Warfarin, Pradaxa, and Plavix, 5-7 days before the procedure.
Once in the examination room, Dr. Lui will explain to you about the procedure in detail.
Your skin over the area of the procedure will be cleaned with antiseptic solution. It will then be covered with a sterile drape or towels.
Ultrasound may be used during the procedure. This will help locate the right area for fine needle aspiration.
A thin needle attached to a syringe will be inserted through the skin into the abnormal area.
A vacuum inside the syringe causes body fluid or tissue to be suctioned (aspirated) into the needle and syringe.
The procedure is about 5 to 10 minutes.
The biopsy sample will be sent to lab for further testing.
No special precautions or restrictions are required following a fine needle aspiration biopsy. You may resume your normal activities.
Risks & Complications
Serious complications or infection at the biopsy site are rare. Minor bleeding under the skin at the biopsy site can occur. The result of your procedure will be forwarded to the referring physician usually within 3 weeks' time. You may contact your physician to discuss the result after 3 weeks.
